In a recent Barron’s article, Matt Farrell, Deputy CIO at WE Family Offices, makes the case for building infrastructure exposure through diversified holdings rather than concentrating on data centers. As capital flows accelerate toward infrastructure investments, Farrell emphasizes that the broader opportunity lies in understanding the different dynamics within the asset class itself.
Farrell views infrastructure as a long-term holding offering inflation protection and demand-driven returns. Rather than follow the data-center trend, he favors diversified exposure across utilities, power generation and other infrastructure sectors, reasoning that technology obsolescence and lease-renewal risk make data centers less attractive. His public infrastructure holdings include utilities, cellphone towers, and railroads.
The article also examines emerging infrastructure themes, including renewable energy, grid modernization, and water infrastructure.
