Campden FB Highlights WE Insight on Family Office Industry in Journal Of Wealth Management

Financial Advisor

Campden FB, the magazine for business-owning families with substantial wealth, discusses the WE Family Offices paper, A Family Office By Any Other Name recently published in the Journal of Wealth Management. With critical information about the role of a family office, the Campden FB article focuses specifically on recent industry-wide trends of firms holding themselves out to be family offices when, given the actual role they play with respect to a family’s wealth, they are not truly family offices in the conventional sense.

Campden FB highlighted several points discussed in the paper, published in the Winter 2014 edition of the Journal, including the need for an objective definition of “family offices” based on the role they play, rather than the services they offer, so that genuine family offices can be differentiated from “imposters” in the market place. As the paper points out, one example of how widespread this misunderstanding of what a family office is and does can be found in the Bloomberg Family Office Ranking, released in November. Campden FB points out that the entire top half of the list is comprised entirely of private banks and brokerage firms holding themselves out as family offices. This co-opting of the name “family office” puts families at a significant disadvantage when seeking a true family office – with interests aligned with the family’s, rather than a parent firm’s – to work with.
